Toyota's New Land Cruiser (Prado) in North America Soon

Toyota is gearing up for the world premiere of its latest SUV, the new Land Cruiser (Prado), scheduled for August 1st in North America. While the model will be marketed simply as Land Cruiser in this region, it shares its design cues with the Land Cruiser J300, which made its debut in 2021 but won't be introduced in North American markets.

Drawing Inspiration from the Past: A Nostalgic Design

In a series of teasers, Toyota showcased the boxy front end of the new Land Cruiser, featuring design elements reminiscent of the 1980s 60-series Land Cruiser (J60). The rectangular headlights are positioned above a pair of intakes, mirroring the iconic styling of the J60. The plastic grille extends elegantly to a black trim piece on the utilitarian bumper, providing a distinctive touch. At the rear, Toyota also draws inspiration from the J60, completing the nostalgic look.

A Glimpse of the Future: The 2024 Land Cruiser

Earlier, Toyota released a teaser image revealing the silhouette of the 2024 Land Cruiser next to the 1960 FJ40 model. The 2024 Lexus GX appears to share similar proportions and greenhouse design with the new Land Cruiser, hinting at a common platform. It is expected that both SUVs will share the ladder-frame TNGA-F chassis and powertrain, including the new-generation Prado's drivetrain.

Power and Performance: Engines and Transmission

Under the hood, the new Land Cruiser is likely to offer the same twin-turbocharged 3.4L V6 engine found in the Lexus GX, producing an impressive 349 hp. Additionally, Toyota might provide an option for the i-Force Max hybrid V6, delivering a combined 437 hp in the Toyota Sequoia. All powertrain options will be paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission and a full-time 4WD system, ensuring superior performance on various terrains.

Reinventing Tradition: Toyota's Approach

While Toyota remains tight-lipped about the detailed specifications of the new Land Cruiser, the company emphasizes its heritage of over 65 years and the concept of reinvention. As the debut date approaches, more information is expected to be unveiled. Once launched, the new Land Cruiser will eventually replace the current-gen Prado in other regions worldwide, bringing a new era of adventure and exploration.
