Cooling Systems.....Need Explanation

Can someone please explain the arrangement of Mechanical Thermostat in cooling system?

What i know is that it helps engine in reaching Optimum Temperature fast and then maintain it at same level.
My question is about its placement in the engine.
Nissan Sunny diesel with CD17 engine has it on the cold water pipe flowing in to the engine with water temperature sensor located on cold side of radiator, whereas in Kia Spectra, it is placed on the HOt water pipe which takes water from Engine to the radiator. Water temperature sensor is also located nearby on same hot water pipe.

HOw does this work, I mean if temperature has to be maintained at 92 degree Centigrades, how come some engines have sensor and thermostat on cold water side whereas some has it on hot water side. HOw do they both perform the same function?

Also is there any difference in basics of Diesel Engine and Petol Engine cooling systems?

I think u r talking about the thermostat valve. Thermostat valve has a wax which melts at a specific temperature. When the vax melts it pushes the valve open and hence lets the water to flow. hence making the car to reach its optimum temperature quick. The sensor for the radiator fan is located right next to it.
