Does using AC reduce the fuel economy of BMW 2 Series significantly?

I’ve noticed a huge in mileage whenever I turn on the AC in my BMW 2 Series, especially in hot weather. Is this normal, o r could there be an underlying issue? How can I reduce fuel wastage while using the air conditioning?

Yes, air conditioning affects fuel economy, especially in hot climates like Pakistan, where AC usage is frequent. The AC compressor draws power from the engine, leading to:

Increased Load on Engine: The engine has to work harder to power the AC, resulting in more fuel consumption.
Turbo Efficiency : Turbocharged engines, like in the BMW 2 Series, may experience slight performance dips when the AC is running at full capacity.
Stop-and-Go Impact: If you use AC in heavy traffic, where the car is idling a lot, fuel consumption increases further.
Solution:

Use Auto Climate Control instead of manually setting AC at maximum cooling.
Park in shaded areas to reduce the cabin heat buildup, so the AC doesn’t have to work as hard.
Use ventilation mode at lower speeds and switch to AC when necessary.
Regular AC maintenance clean filters, check refrigerant levels can improve efficiency.
