How can I clean o r unclog the catalytic converter in my BMW 2 Series?

My BMW 2 Series is showing reduced engine performance, and a mechanic said the catalytic converter might be partially clogged. Is there a way to clean o r unclog it without replacing it, and what methods are effective?
