How to drive vitz in Muree?

In Toyota Vitz AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION what is the function of '2' and 'L'?
Also tell me difference between the two modes. Because when I drove the car in these two modes I felt no difference in driving.

Few days ago I went to Muree, while going up in Muree the car showed its worst performance as the transmission was not able to decide which gear to choose continuously it was shifting up and down.I even switched off the o/d but still I have to press the accelerator pretty hard to make the car over take another car?
Please give me some tips how I can make the performance of the car better in such conditions?

"2" means the car will only have upto 2 gears at max
and "L" means the car will be having upto 1gera at max( not sure on this one though)

In manual when we have to go for sudden acceleration,we go for downshifting e.g. if we are going at 50km/hr at 4th gear and we need to speed up suddenly,we downshift to 3rd or 2nd gear.there is a sudden increase in the speed of the car i.e. the car accelerates quickly than it was doing before.

In automatic you will be usually driving on D.If you need to increase speed in order to overtake someone or to negotitate a steep upward slope, you go for shifting from D to either 2 or L.
In Honda cars there is an option known as "D3" which implies the car will be having a maximum of 3 gears when it is switched from "D4" to "D3"
