WHAT shud I check before buying vitz ?

Dear ALL,

I am planning to buy a vitz from newspaper. I need to know how to check the condition of engine before buying the car ? I don't want to take a mechanic with me. Just give me few tips please so at least I know that major mechanical parts are working well in the car except the body work.

Well i am a noob, but the car should start on the first self, check the exhaust pipe if it has black residue, if it does then the car will need a few quick oil changes. also check the engine bay is everything is intact, check the trunk and petrol inlet to see if the car was ever CNG'd, if it was then step away from the car pleas.
