Why Do My BMW 2 Series Wipers Leave Streaks on the Windshield?

Whenever I use my windshield wipers, they leave streaks and reduce visibility, especially in rain. Could this be due to old wiper blades, dust buildup, o r a mechanical issue with the wiper arms?
