Why does my BMW 2 Series overheat in traffic but run fine on highways?

My BMW 2 Series engine temperature rises when I’m stuck in traffic o r idling for too long, but it cools down when I start driving at higher speeds. What could be the reason for this issue, and how can I fix it?

If your BMW 2 Series overheats in traffic but cools down at highway speeds, the issue is likely related to airflow o r cooling system performance at low speeds. Possible causes include:

Faulty Cooling Fan: The radiator fan is essential for cooling when the car is stationary o r moving slowly. If it’s not working, the car will overheat in traffic.
Weak Water Pump: The water pump may not circulate coolant effectively at low RPMs, causing the temperature to rise in stop-and-go traffic.
Blocked Radiator: A clogged radiator may not cool efficiently at low speeds but works better with increased airflow at high speeds.
Low Coolant o r Air Pockets: Air in the system can cause overheating when the car idles but might circulate better at higher speeds.
Solution:

Check if the radiator fan turns on when the engine gets hot. If not, the fan motor o r relay may need replacement.
Inspect the water pump for leaks o r wear.
Clean the radiator and ensure it has proper airflow.
Bleed the cooling system to remove air pockets.
