Why Does My Steering Make a Whining o r Humming Noise?

When I turn the steering wheel, I hear a whining o r humming noise. Could this be a failing power steering pump, low fluid, o r an issue with the EPS system?

Possible Causes:
Failing EPS Motor o r Control Module: Since the BMW 2 Series uses electronic power steering, a whining noise may indicate an issue with the EPS motor o r module.
Low o r Contaminated Power Steering Fluid For Older Models: If your model has hydraulic steering, dirty o r low fluid can cause whining noises.
Worn Steering Rack: A faulty rack can create humming o r whining sounds, especially at low speeds.
Loose o r Worn Serpentine Belt: If the belt that drives the power steering pump is slipping o r worn, it can produce a whining noise.
Solution:
Scan the EPS system for error codes and repair o r replace the motor if needed.
If your model has hydraulic steering, check and refill power steering fluid o r flush it if contaminated.
Inspect the steering rack for wear and replace if necessary.
Check the serpentine belt and replace it if its loose o r worn.
