60 km/h Speed Limit for Bikers as Punjab Builds Bike Lanes
In an effort to reduce accidents and improve traffic management across the province, the Punjab government has made a significant move by implementing a new speed limit of 60 kilometers per hour for all motorcyclists. This decision was finalized during a cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.
Addressing the Surge in Road Fatalities
During a recent press briefing, Azma Bukhari, the Punjab Information Minister, expressed grave concern over the alarming rise in road accidents and fatalities, particularly those caused by speeding. “It is devastating to witness lives lost to speeding accidents,” she stated, underscoring the importance of strict public safety regulations. The government aims to minimize these tragedies through decisive actions and regulations, including enforcing the newly set speed limit.
Stringent Enforcement to Ensure Road Safety
The government has assured the public that stringent enforcement measures will be in place to ensure full compliance with the 60 km/h speed limit. According to Bukhari, “Motorcycles / Bikes will no longer be allowed to exceed this speed on any road in Punjab,” emphasizing the importance of this rule for road safety.

Lahore to Introduce Dedicated Bike Lanes
In a complementary move, the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) is working on creating dedicated bike lanes throughout Lahore to further ensure the safety of motorcyclists. The first phase of this project is underway on Ferozepur Road, where the initial motorcycle lane is being developed. The Chief Minister shared her commitment to expanding this project to all major roads across Punjab, providing safe spaces for bikers and improving the overall traffic flow.
Bike Lanes Planned for Key Roads in Lahore
The LDA Engineering Wing has already submitted a feasibility report and is actively designing the project. The first phase will include the creation of dedicated lanes on three major roads: from Kalma Chowk to Siddique Trade Center, along Canal Road to Lahore Bridge, and on Ferozepur Road. Plans for a third road are also in the final stages. These bike lanes will be constructed with modern materials, featuring clear signage and specialized surfacing to improve traffic flow and enhance safety for riders.
Why Separate Bike Lanes Are Crucial
The introduction of dedicated bike lanes is an essential step toward providing safer riding environments for motorcyclists, who often face danger when traveling alongside fast-moving vehicles. These dedicated lanes will separate bikers from cars and trucks, drastically reducing the risk of accidents and improving traffic management.
