BMW M5 2025 Introduces 717-HP Plug-In Hybrid Powertrain

The new BMW M5 has grown significantly in its seventh generation, increasing in size and weight. It is 1.2 inches longer, 2.7 inches wider, and 2.1 inches taller than the previous M5 Competition. The wheelbase has also been extended by 0.9 inches. The 2025 model weighs a hefty 5390 pounds, which is 1153 pounds more than its predecessor and heavier than the 2024 electric i5 M60 xDrive sedan.

Introducing Plug-In Technology
The MBW M5 now features advanced plug-in hybrid technology. It is powered by a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8 engine paired with a synchronous electric motor, together producing 717 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque. This marks a significant increase from the outgoing M5 CS. The electric motor is supported by a 14.8-kWh lithium-ion battery, enabling a temporary torque boost from 206 to 332 pound-feet during launch control.

Impressive Performance
With the electric motor's instant torque, BMW's claimed 3.4-second 0-60 mph time for the M5 seems conservative. The top speed is listed at 190 mph with the optional BMW Driver's package, or 155 mph without it. The M5 offers five driving modes, including Electric, Hybrid, and eControl battery-saver. The Dynamic and Dynamic Plus modes, available with the M Drive Professional package, are designed for track use.

Advanced Customization
The M5's powertrain allows extensive customization. Drivers can adjust the throttle mapping, transmission, chassis, steering, and brakes. The all-wheel-drive system is also configurable, allowing power distribution between the front and rear axles. New features include a boost control function and an improved M suspension system with adaptive dampers and four-wheel steering for better agility and a reduced turning radius.

Bold New Design
The new BMW M5 features a bold design, with carbon-fiber channels extending from the redesigned kidney grille, wider fenders, and quad exhaust tips through the diffuser. Inside, it boasts a three-spoke M leather steering wheel, more carbon fiber, and redesigned programmable M buttons. The M5 will debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July and go on sale globally in November, starting at $120,675.
