Daihatsu Launching Suzuki Jimny Competitor in 2023

Daihatsu Launching Suzuki Jimny Competitor in 2023
Daihatsu is set to unveil a new off-road SUV, the Rugger, to compete with the Suzuki Jimny. According to Sources, the Rugger will have a rugged exterior appearance but will not be as capable as the Jimny when it comes to off-roading. Instead of a ladder-frame chassis, the Rugger will be built on the DNGA platform from the Taft crossover and will feature an on-demand all-wheel drive system, while remaining primarily front-wheel drive.

In comparison, the Jimny is equipped with rear-wheel drive and a four-wheel drive mode, along with a lockable differential. Despite its off-roading capabilities, the Jimny's crossover-based platform may make it more comfortable on regular roads than the Rugger.

The Rugger nameplate is being resurrected after almost three decades, and it is expected to cost around JPY 3.1 million to JPY 4.1 million, similar to the Japanese Jimny. The availability of the Rugger, whether it will be exclusive to Japan or available worldwide, remains unknown at this time. If it does become available globally, it could potentially pose a challenge to the popular Suzuki Jimny.
