GAC Unveils Aion S Max Electric Sedan in China

GAC has recently unveiled the Aion S Max electric sedan in China, adding another member to its NEV (New Energy Vehicle) brand, Aion, under the GAC New Energy umbrella. The Aion S Max is built on the Aion Plus architecture, with an increased body length and revised styling. The Aion series started with the introduction of the Aion S sedan in the Chinese market in 2019. Over the years, GAC has continually updated and expanded the series, with the Aion S Plus sedan entering the Chinese market in 2021. The Aion S and S Plus models were sold side by side, accumulating a remarkable 182,230 units in sales in 2023. Now, the Aion S Max is introduced as the replacement for the Aion S Plus.

Design and Dimensions

The Aion S Max exhibits a heavily facelifted appearance compared to the S Plus model. Its front end features split headlights with quad LED light bars and a smaller air intake in the front bumper. The side profile showcases flush door handles and intricately designed alloy wheels. At the rear, the Aion S Max is adorned with a thin full-width LED strip that extends through the trunk door. In terms of dimensions, the Aion S Max measures 4,863 mm in length, 1,890 mm in width, and 1,515 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,760 mm.

Interior Comfort and Features

Inside, the Aion S Max's center console has been reworked and now includes smaller air vents and two wireless charging pads, along with a covered storage compartment. The drive selector is positioned behind the steering wheel, a common design choice in new Chinese EVs. The interior is customizable with various color themes depending on the trim and features ambient mood lighting. Notably, the front seats of the S Max can be folded down to create a bed. GAC boasts a generous legroom of 960 mm and headroom of 965 mm. Additional interior features include heated and ventilated front seats, a Face-ID sensor, a panoramic roof, and an 11-speaker sound system.

Variants and Powertrain

The Aion S Max is available in five trim levels. The first four variants are equipped with a 204-hp electric motor on the front axle and can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.5 seconds. The flagship variant boasts a more powerful 245-hp electric motor with an impressive 0-100 km/h acceleration time of just 6.8 seconds. In terms of battery options, buyers can choose between an LFP battery with a capacity of 59.5 kWh and a WLTC range of 510 km or a ternary (NMC) battery with a capacity of 69.7 kWh and a WLTC range of 610 km. The Aion S Max also features a V2L (Vehicle to Load) function, enabling it to power other appliances using its battery.

Pricing and Availability

The new GAC Aion S Max is competitively priced, starting at 202,900 yuan ($27,730) for the flagship version and going up to 149,900 yuan ($20,500) for the base variant.
