Indian Railways Key for Maruti, Hyundai Vehicle Shipping

Rail transport continues to stand as the least emission-intensive mode of transportation in India, playing a vital role in moving both people and goods across long distances. More than 20% of all vehicles manufactured in India rely on this eco-friendly mode of transportation, which is particularly crucial for the country's passenger transit system.

Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai's Rail Commitment

Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai, two of India's automotive giants, have embraced rail transport for shipping their vehicles, aligning with India's growing preference for environmentally responsible modes of transport.

Maruti Suzuki, for instance, transported over 1.49 million vehicles by rail during the fiscal year 2022-23, contributing to a reduction of 6,700 metric tonnes of carbon emissions. This marks a significant increase from FY2015, when only 65,700 units were transported by rail, showcasing a five-fold growth in just eight years. Notably, in FY2023, Maruti dispatched over 100,000 more units compared to FY2022, representing a remarkable 43% surge in rail shipments.

Rahul Bharti, Executive Officer of Corporate Affairs at Maruti Suzuki India, emphasized the company's ongoing commitment to rail transport, highlighting its effectiveness in reducing carbon emissions, alleviating road congestion, and conserving fuel.

Hyundai, too, has embraced rail transport for both domestic distribution and exports to Nepal. Tarun Garg, Chief Operating Officer of Hyundai Motor India, noted the extensive utilization of India's railway network to transport vehicles from the Sriperumbudur plant to dealers across the nation, with nearly 23% of Hyundai vehicles relying on rail transport.

The increased adoption of rail transport by these automotive giants reflects a growing emphasis on sustainable and efficient transportation methods in India's rapidly evolving automotive landscape.
