Islamabad Shifts to Digital Payment for Public Parking Fees

The Metropolitan Corporation Islamabad (MCI) has undertaken a significant initiative to introduce digital technology to streamline the public parking fee system across the federal capital, with the aim of enhancing the city's overall infrastructure.

Under this transformative endeavor, MCI will implement a Parking Management Information System designed to revolutionize the way residents and visitors pay for parking. To achieve this, the DMA (Directorate of Municipal Administration) department has issued a call for expressions of interest from fintech and technology solution providers.

The initial phase of the project will concentrate on some of Islamabad's most frequented areas, including F-9 Park, Lake View, and the Centaurus Parking facility. Additionally, the G-9 Public Transport and the Kohsar Market parking facilities will be included in the digitalization initiative. The parking charges at the F-7 plazas will also undergo the digitization process.

In subsequent phases, the project will extend to cover other areas within the city. It's worth noting that the DMA previously conducted an auction for the collection of parking fees at the F-9 location, but unfortunately, no companies expressed interest in the auction.

Regarding the specifics of the parking management system, an official from MCI revealed that it will be established through a public-private partnership model. The complete system will be implemented by a private company, and revenue will be shared as part of this partnership.

The official emphasized that the transition to digital technology will not result in an increase in parking fees. Therefore, the existing rates set by MCI will remain unchanged, with motorcycle parking priced at Rs. 30 and car parking at Rs. 50. This move aligns with MCI's commitment to maintaining affordability for the residents and visitors of Islamabad.
