Mazda Unveils the EZ-6: A Budget-Friendly Electric Car

Mazda has introduced its new electric vehicle, the EZ-6, to the Chinese market, priced starting at approximately $19,600. This launch comes through a partnership with Changan Mazda and represents Mazda’s effort to bring an affordable yet capable EV to the market. Although currently exclusive to China, Mazda is considering expanding EZ-6 sales to other regions, including Europe, depending on its performance.

Two Powertrain Options for the EZ-6
The Mazda EZ-6 offers two primary versions: an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) and a fully electric model. The EREV variant combines a battery with a 1.5-liter engine that charges the battery rather than powering the wheels directly. This engine setup supports two battery options: an 18.9 kWh pack and a 28.4 kWh pack, offering an electric-only range of 130 to 200 km under China's CLTC standard.

Powerful EREV Motor
The EREV model’s electric motor produces 215 horsepower, with rear-wheel drive, providing solid performance alongside its extended electric range. The motor enables flexibility for drivers, particularly those seeking an eco-friendly vehicle that still supports longer distances without frequent charging stops, appealing to those with range concerns.

All-Electric EZ-6 Performance
For drivers seeking a full electric experience, the EZ-6 also comes with a choice between a 56.1-kWh or a 68.8-kWh battery. The fully electric model features a stronger motor, producing 255 horsepower and 318 Nm of torque, also powering the rear wheels. This model can travel up to 600 km on a single charge, making it a practical choice for daily use and longer trips alike.

Global Expansion Plans
Mazda’s launch of the EZ-6 in China is a strategic move to test its EV capabilities, with plans to evaluate its success before potential expansion to Europe and North America. The feedback and market performance of the EZ-6 will help shape Mazda’s broader electric vehicle strategy, determining if it will continue rolling out affordable EVs in international markets.
