China has been a driving force in the electric vehicle (EV) revolution, witnessing numerous domestic automakers competing for a share in the rapidly expanding market. Among the recent contenders is the Polestones 01, an Extended Range Electric Vehicle (EREV) SUV designed by Pininfarina, marking its entrance into the Chinese market with the commencement of deliveries. The Polestones 01 aims to challenge established players like Li Auto's L8 and L9.

Developed by Rox Motor and manufactured by Beijing Automobile Works (BAW), the Polestones 01 offers versatility with configurations available in both six and seven seats. Its distinctive bulky appearance sets it apart in the competitive EV landscape, making a bold visual statement.

In terms of dimensions, the six-seat version measures 5,050 mm/1,980 mm/1,869 mm, with a wheelbase of 3,010 mm. The larger seven-seat variant extends to 5,295 mm, placing the Polestones 01 in direct competition with counterparts like the Li Auto L8 and L9.

Beneath the hood, the Polestones 01 incorporates a 1.5-liter internal combustion engine (ICE) generating 154 horsepower, crafted by Xinchen China Power. Unlike conventional vehicles where the ICE directly powers the wheels, in the Polestones 01, it functions as a generator. Two electric motors propel the vehicle, delivering a robust 476 horsepower, supported by a 56 kWh ternary pack from CATL. This unique configuration grants the Polestones 01 an impressive mixed range of 1,338 km (CLTC), making it an attractive option for extensive journeys.

A standout feature is the SUV's pure electric range of 235 km (CLTC), allowing for most city trips without engaging the ICE generator. With a starting price of RMB 349,900 (approximately €45,600) and a higher-tier option at RMB 359,900 (around €46,900), the Polestones 01 competes directly with Li Auto's L8 and L9, both achieving monthly sales exceeding 10,000 units in the Chinese market. The market's response will be closely observed to determine if the Polestones 01 can divert customers from these well-established rivals.
