Toyota and Subaru to Launch New EV SUV in 2026

Toyota and Subaru are gearing up to introduce a new electric SUV, expanding their EV lineup beyond the existing bZ4X and Solterra models. Production for this zero-emission vehicle is scheduled to start in January 2026. This joint project reflects the companies’ continued collaboration in the electric vehicle market, aiming to deliver a fresh offering for EV enthusiasts.

Production Shifts to Subaru's Facility
Unlike their previous models, which were produced at Toyota’s Aichi factory, the new EV will be manufactured at Subaru’s Yajima facility. This shift in production location highlights Subaru's growing role in the companies’ joint EV ventures. The new SUV will also integrate elements from the bZ4X and Solterra, allowing for faster development and reduced costs, a practical move to streamline production.

Ambitious Production Goals
Toyota and Subaru plan to produce between 15,000 to 20,000 units of this new electric SUV each month. The companies are targeting key global markets, including North America, Europe, and Japan, with potential expansions into other regions. These production goals reflect their ambition to compete more aggressively in the EV market, where rivals like Hyundai and Kia have seen greater success.

Pricing Details Still Unclear
Pricing for this new SUV remains uncertain. The bZ4X and Solterra are currently priced at $44,465 and $46,340 respectively in the U.S., and it is yet to be determined whether the upcoming model will be priced similarly or lower. Market competitiveness will likely play a role in finalizing the price, especially with strong contenders like Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 and Kia’s EV6.

Future EV Plans and Continued ICE Development
In addition to this new SUV, Toyota and Subaru have confirmed they are working on three more electric crossover models. These future projects are expected to diversify their EV portfolio. Despite their focus on electric vehicles, both automakers remain committed to internal combustion engine development. Earlier this year, Toyota, Subaru, and Mazda revealed plans for new ICE technologies, signaling their dedication to both traditional and electric vehicle innovations.
