Toyota’s Urban Cruiser EV: A Bold New Addition

Toyota is stepping up its electric vehicle (EV) game with the Toyota Urban Cruiser EV, a compact SUV that bears a striking resemblance to the Suzuki e-Vitara. Scheduled for a grand debut at the 2025 Brussels Motor Show, this new addition signals Toyota's commitment to expanding its EV portfolio. Despite its similarities with Suzuki's e-Vitara, the Urban Cruiser EV boasts unique design features that distinguish it as a Toyota innovation.

Distinctive Design Elements

Although built on the same platform as the Suzuki e-Vitara, the Urban Cruiser EV features distinct Toyota styling cues. It sports a redesigned front fascia with unique headlights and signature tail lights, giving it a character of its own. The interior, while sharing much with its Suzuki counterpart, incorporates Toyota-specific elements. The 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and 10.1-inch infotainment system provide a familiar yet polished user experience.

Compact Yet Spacious Interior

Despite its compact size, the Urban Cruiser EV surprises with a roomy interior, thanks to its 2,700 mm wheelbase. Toyota claims the space rivals that of midsize SUVs, offering sliding and reclining rear seats for added comfort. At 4,285 mm in length, this SUV is designed to maximize cabin functionality without compromising on exterior dimensions.

Powertrain Options and Battery Choices

The Urban Cruiser EV by Toyota will come in both front-wheel drive (FWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) variants. Buyers can choose from three power outputs: 142 hp (FWD), 172 hp (FWD), or 182 hp (AWD). Battery options include a 49 kWh pack for FWD models and a 61 kWh pack for both FWD and AWD configurations. These options provide flexibility for urban and off-road adventures.

Toyota’s Vision for an Electric Future

Toyota has yet to release official range estimates but has equipped the Urban Cruiser with efficiency-focused features like an energy-saving heat pump and a manual battery pre-heating function. The Urban Cruiser is part of Toyota's broader plan to launch 15 zero-emission vehicles by 2026, including six battery-electric vehicles built on dedicated EV platforms, solidifying its position in the growing EV market.
