Ive encountered this problem in an old 5 series, upon disassembly I found the the reverse clutch drums's main circlip that holds the plates had snapped and come loose out of its housing ripping its O ring too - effectively making it lose pressure and not engage the reverse drive.
It can be fixed with a similar clip lock - I found a thicker clip - as the original one is very hard to come by - and had the drum regrooved slightly that the clip was sitting very tightly in it. This transmission you are using I believe has no definite life and can go on forever with proper oil changes and temperature control - except of this little quirk that happens to it.
Its funny isnt it that this transmission size is quite small compared to the car..
A good transmission repair place can get this sorted - but I would advise that you source a rebuild kit - it'll be in the best interest as the transmission will be opened up all the way.
