Yes, a weak ignition coil can cause delayed o r incomplete combustion, which leads to unburnt fuel entering the exhaust and igniting there — causing a backfire.

How to Identify Backfiring from Coil Issues:

Sharp pop sound from exhaust o r intake

Strong fuel smell from exhaust

Black smoke o r flames in rare cases

Fix:

Replace ignition coil if it’s weak.

Also inspect spark plugs and timing settings to rule out other causes.

Make sure the carburetor isn’t delivering too much fuel running rich.
