EV Charging Prices to Go Down Soon

The government has urged NEPRA to revise electricity rates for EV charging stations, aiming for a significant EV charging price cut. Under the proposal, electricity may be provided at Rs. 23.57 per unit. However, after tax adjustments, the cost for charging stations is expected to increase to Rs. 39 per unit, still 45% lower than the current price. This move aligns with the government's goal of reducing EV charging costs and promoting electric vehicle adoption.

To bridge the gap between the existing and proposed tariffs, the government has suggested implementing a cross-subsidy mechanism. This initiative aims to facilitate the transition of 30% of vehicles in Pakistan to electric by 2030. Currently, EV charging stations pay Rs. 45 per unit, but after tax additions, the cost rises to Rs. 71.10 per unit. With the proposed changes, cheap EV charging rates will be introduced, making electric mobility more accessible.

The government believes these revised tariffs will accelerate EV adoption by offering an electric car charging discount. All applicable taxes and adjustments will be incorporated into the revised rates to maintain transparency. During a NEPRA hearing, the case officer disclosed that the government has proposed lowering the base tariff from Rs. 45.54 per unit to Rs. 23.57 per unit. At present, EV consumers pay up to Rs. 70 per unit for charging services, but lower EV charging fees are expected to bring much-needed relief to consumers.

The Power Division highlighted that Pakistan’s EV infrastructure remains underdeveloped, with only eight charging stations currently operational. To address climate change and expand EV accessibility, the government plans to open the market and attract investors. As part of this effort, the Cabinet has approved an EV charging cost reduction, ensuring that more people can afford electric vehicles.

Officials from the Power Division noted that the commercial electricity tariff stands at nearly Rs. 94 per unit, though it is not fully applied. Currently, consumers pay around Rs. 70 per unit. Over the past year, EV charging stations consumed only 94,000 electricity units, with an estimated 7,000 to 8,000 EV users in Pakistan. With the new policies, as the government slashes EV charging prices, the demand for electric vehicles is expected to rise, leading to a greener and more sustainable future.
