Exclusive Diamond Lanes for Motorcyclists Announced

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has announced the establishment of diamond lanes for motorcyclists on major roads in Lahore. Inspired by her visit to China, where she observed a similar system, these lanes aim to ensure the safety of motorcycle riders. The Chief Minister emphasized the urgent need for these exclusive motorcycle lanes to address the increasing number of severe motorcycle accidents in the city. Senior Minister Maryam Aurangzeb has been tasked with supervising this motorcycle lane initiative, which prioritizes the safety of motorcyclists, a significant segment of daily commuters.

During a meeting with cabinet members, the Chief Minister shared insights from her visit to Chinese cities such as Nanjing and Zhanjiang, where she saw dedicated lanes for bikers. These motorcyclist diamond lanes will play a crucial role in reducing head injuries, a leading cause of fatalities among riders. Recognizing that motorcycles are a primary mode of transportation for many, she underscored the need to provide safer infrastructure for bikers and reduce accidents.

Pilot Project Launch on Ferozepur Road

To bring the motorcycle traffic Diamond lanes to life, a pilot project will begin on Ferozepur Road. Inspired by Beijing’s system, where bike lanes are separated by wide sidewalks, the Chief Minister has instructed the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) and the Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Athar Waheed to lead the initiative. Senior officials have inspected city roads and identified three-lane roads as suitable for the project. Specialized traffic police teams are collaborating with the LDA and the Traffic Engineering and Planning Agency (TEPA) to conduct a feasibility study.

The Chief Traffic Officer confirmed the establishment of the new motorbike Diamond lanes exclusively for motorcycles. Awareness campaigns will educate bikers on the importance of adhering to these designated lanes, while strict penalties will be enforced for other vehicles violating these rules. The project is set to enhance traffic flow and provide a safer commuting experience for motorcyclists.

If the pilot project proves successful, the government plans to expand the initiative to other roads across Lahore. This visionary project is expected to not only protect riders but also streamline the city’s traffic system, showcasing a progressive step toward modernizing Lahore’s transportation infrastructure.
