Honda and Huawei collaborate on EV self-driving

Honda is making significant strides in the Chinese electric vehicle (EV) market through the Honda and Huawei EV collaboration. This strategic partnership integrates Huawei's advanced smart driving solutions into Honda's newly launched EV brand, "Ye." Such alliances underscore a growing trend where automakers leverage Huawei's technology to enhance their self-driving capabilities. The collaboration highlights Honda's focus on adopting innovative solutions to gain a competitive edge in the rapidly evolving EV sector.

Launched in April 2024, the "Ye" brand caters exclusively to Chinese EV consumers. The lineup includes three models: Ye P7, Ye S7, and Ye GT. Initially scheduled for release in late 2024, the Ye P7 and Ye S7 launches have been rescheduled to the first quarter of 2025. This delay stems from unmet expectations in marketing, communication, and technology standards set by Honda's Japanese stakeholders. The integration of Huawei's solutions marks a pivotal move to meet these expectations and strengthen the Honda Huawei autonomous EV lineup.

Honda's decision to incorporate Huawei's smart driving technology stems from regulatory challenges slowing the approval of its proprietary autonomous systems. This partnership, a key aspect of the Huawei Honda self-driving partnership, allows Honda to accelerate the deployment of advanced driving features. By offering "Ye" models equipped with either Honda Sensing 360+ or Huawei's systems, the company provides customers with diverse options tailored to their preferences.

The EV technology Honda Huawei collaboration coincides with Honda's efforts to counter declining sales in China. In the first eleven months of 2024, Honda reported a 30.7% year-on-year drop in sales. The "Ye" brand, equipped with cutting-edge self-driving features, represents a strategic response to these challenges and an opportunity to regain market share in the Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) sector.

Honda's two EV factories in China further bolster its production capacity. The Wuhan facility, developed in partnership with Dongfeng Motor, began operations in October 2023, while the Guangzhou factory, a joint venture with GAC Group, started production in December 2023. Each facility has an annual production capacity of 120,000 vehicles, enabling Honda to meet growing demand for Honda Huawei self-driving cars and consolidate its position in the competitive Chinese EV market.
