NHA Increases Toll Rates for the Third Time in Seven Months

The National Highways Authority (NHA) has once again raised toll rates across highways and motorways in Pakistan. This marks the third significant increase in just seven months, with the new toll charges set to take effect on January 5, 2025. The NHA’s objective behind these hikes is to generate Rs. 102 billion in revenue by the end of the 2024-25 fiscal year, a substantial jump from the Rs. 64 billion collected in the previous year. This move aims to support the ongoing maintenance and development of the country's crucial highway network.

The latest NHA toll rate hike impacts several major motorways and expressways, including the Islamabad-Peshawar Motorway (M-1), Lahore-Abdul Hakeem Motorway (M3), Pindi Bhattian-Faisalabad-Multan Motorway (M4), Multan-Sukkur Motorway (M5), D I Khan-Hakla Motorway (M14), and the Mansehra Expressway. Each of these routes will see varying increases in toll charges, affecting commuters and transport services.

The NHA toll rates increase on specific routes has raised concerns among travelers. For example, on the M-1 (Islamabad-Peshawar), car tolls will rise from Rs. 460 to Rs. 500, while truck tolls will increase from Rs. 1,950 to Rs. 2,300. Similar toll hikes are seen across other routes like M-3, M-4, and M-5, with car tolls on M-3 climbing from Rs. 650 to Rs. 700. The frequent toll increases have sparked criticism from the public, especially since many commuters are already grappling with the rising cost of living.

Despite the criticism, the NHA has justified these toll increases as essential for the maintenance and expansion of Pakistan’s highway network. According to the NHA, the increased revenue from toll charges is necessary to fund improvements that ensure the safety and efficiency of these key transportation routes. They argue that these funds will also support projects aimed at enhancing the country’s infrastructure.

The impact of these toll hikes on traffic flow and the transportation sector remains to be seen. As the NHA toll rates 2025 continue to rise, it will be crucial for the authority to monitor public reactions and address any concerns. The increased toll charges could affect both businesses and the general public, raising questions about the overall impact on Pakistan's economy and daily commuting.
