Nissan GT-R R35 Bids Farewell After 18 Legendary Years

After nearly two decades of dominance on the streets and racetracks, the Nissan GT-R is officially retiring. This high-performance icon, which redefined speed and precision engineering, will no longer be produced. The announcement marks the end of an unforgettable era for car enthusiasts worldwide.

Production Halted After 17 Years

The production of the GT-R R35 has come to an end, as confirmed by Nissan. As of February 28, 2024, new orders in Japan have been halted, with the automaker expressing gratitude to its loyal fanbase since the model’s launch in 2007. The 2025 model will be the final opportunity for collectors and speed lovers to own this legendary machine.

Global Phase-Out Timeline

Due to evolving automotive regulations, the GT-R R35 had already been gradually discontinued in several key markets.
Region
Final Production Year
North America
October 2024 (T-Spec Takumi, Skyline Final Editions)
Australia & New Zealand
2021
Europe & UK
2022
Japan
February 2024
The discontinuation follows increasing emissions restrictions, making it difficult for traditional combustion engines to meet regulatory requirements.

The Powerhouse That Redefined Performance

First introduced at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show, the GT-R R35 revolutionized the supercar industry. Often referred to as "Godzilla," this beast combined cutting-edge aerodynamics with an ultra-powerful twin-turbocharged engine.

Its legendary 3.8-liter V6 engine evolved significantly over the years:
Year
Horsepower (HP)
2007
473 HP (353 kW)
2010
530 HP (395 kW)
2016
565 HP (421 kW)
2023
565 HP (421 kW)
With its advanced all-wheel-drive system, lightning-fast dual-clutch transmission, and razor-sharp handling, the GT-R R35 became a benchmark for performance cars.

What’s Next for the GT-R?

Although the GT-R R35 is retiring, the GT-R legacy is far from over. In 2023, Nissan teased the Hyper Force Concept, a futuristic design that hints at what could become the GT-R R36.

Reports suggest that the next-generation GT-R could adopt a fully electric cars or powertrain featuring solid-state battery technology. However, since this technology is still under development and not expected before 2028, the arrival of a successor may take a few more years.

For now, the GT-R R35 leaves behind an unmatched legacy, remembered as one of the most influential supercars ever built.
