Punjab Plans Virtual Smart Cards for Vehicle Registration

The Punjab Excise Department is taking steps to address the backlog in vehicle registration by introducing virtual smart cards in the province. Acknowledging a potential month-long delay in the issuance of physical registration cards due to complications in the tendering process, the department is now exploring virtual alternatives to streamline the process.

As reported by a local media outlet, the provincial excise department is contemplating the introduction of virtual smart cards, pending approval from the provincial government. A formal summary has been submitted to seek the government's permission, and once granted, citizens across the province will have the option to obtain virtual smart cards for their vehicles.

To acquire these virtual smart cards, vehicle owners can complete the necessary registration steps online. The cards will be available for download from the Excise Department's website, providing a digital and efficient alternative to the conventional physical cards.

In addition to the virtual smart card initiative, the Excise Department recently introduced a doorstep service for vehicle registration. Interested individuals can utilize this service by dialing the Punjab Information Technology Board’s helpline at 080008786. Subsequently, a department representative will visit the applicant's location to facilitate the registration process promptly.

By incorporating digital solutions like virtual smart cards and doorstep services, the Punjab Excise Department aims to enhance the efficiency and accessibility of the vehicle registration process, addressing the challenges posed by the existing backlog and contributing to a more streamlined and user-friendly experience for citizens in the province.
