Toyota Prius: Japan's 2023-24 Car of the Year

The Toyota Prius has secured its position as the Car of the Year for 2023-24, marking its third win of Japan's highest automotive honor. Despite former CEO Akio Toyoda's initial consideration of retiring the groundbreaking gasoline hybrid, the Prius underwent a remarkable transformation, emerging with a revamped design and powertrain under the guidance of product planners and engineers.

The Prius's enhanced performance and radical new styling have not only impressed the Japanese judging panel but have also garnered acclaim from media outlets in the U.S. and Europe, solidifying its status as the best-looking and high-performing Prius to date.

The innovative approach of incorporating three powertrains in one chassis—gasoline, diesel mild hybrid, and fully electric—earned the Prius a resounding victory with 360 votes. This multifaceted design not only showcased outstanding handling and fuel economy but also established a new level of performance, setting it apart in the competitive automotive landscape.

In a closely contested race, the BMW X1 claimed the second spot, securing the Import Car of the Year trophy for its excellent handling and versatile powertrain options. The Honda ZR-V crossover secured the third spot with 100 votes, underscoring the competitiveness of this year's Car of the Year awards.

The 44th edition of the Japan Car of the Year awards involved representatives from 39 influential automotive and lifestyle publications, comprising 60 jurors. The rigorous voting process included testing the "10 Best" cars for 2023 at the Sodegaura Forest Raceway near Tokyo. In special awards categories, the 660cc Mitsubishi Delica Mini kei-car earned the Design Car of the Year trophy, while the Nissan Serena received the Technology Car of the Year award for its innovative e-Power system and Pro-Pilot 2.0 driver assist system.
