According to Industry insider, Apple is leaning towards Hyundai as a key partner in car production due to its electric vehicle platform, EGMP, its production facilities in the United States.
The production and manufacturing of the car will be supervised by Kia, while Apple will have control of the self driving hardware, software and user experience, battery technologies, semiconductors and the form factor.

Apple and Hyundai were talking to precede the project for a while. Hyundai admitted more and more, only to withdraw later.
