Xiaomi's SU7 Electric Car Delivery Starts Now!

Chinese tech giant Xiaomi has unveiled plans to kickstart deliveries of its inaugural electric vehicle (EV) in China within this month. Through an announcement on Weibo, the company disclosed that 59 of its outlets spread across 29 cities in the nation will commence orders for its new Speed Ultra 7 (SU7) sedan. An eagerly anticipated launch event is scheduled for March 28, where the pricing details of the new EV are anticipated to be revealed.

The backdrop of this announcement is the notable surge in China’s EV sales, marking an 18% increase during January and February. This growth trajectory closely echoes the 21% surge witnessed throughout the entirety of 2023. Notably, market leader BYD has initiated a series of substantial price reductions this year in response to weaker domestic demand, seeking to entice consumers with competitive pricing strategies.

At the heart of Xiaomi's electric vehicle ambitions lies its SU7 sedan, which was unveiled in December. Xiaomi’s Chief Executive Lei Jun had boldly proclaimed the company's aspiration to rank among the world’s top five automakers. The SU7 boasts a cutting-edge "super electric motor" technology promising swifter acceleration than its counterparts from Tesla and Porsche, Lei asserted during the unveiling.

Analysts speculate that the integration of Xiaomi's popular smartphones and electronic devices with the car’s operating system will resonate with the tech giant's existing customer base. Lei, in a recent Weibo post, emphasized the significance of smart technology in distinguishing Xiaomi’s cars in a rapidly evolving market landscape.

Production of the vehicles will be managed by a subsidiary of the state-owned BAIC Group, housed in a factory located in Beijing with an annual production capacity of 200,000 vehicles. This manufacturing arrangement underscores Xiaomi's strategic partnership with established players in the automotive industry as it ventures into this new terrain.
